Paws For Thought: Pembroke Welsh Corgi Dog Grooming Houston

When it comes to care and dog grooming Houston of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, don’t be fooled by the breed’s small stature. The corgi packs a big personality in a very small package. While they are agreeable little dogs, they are also very energetic and outgoing, requiring a firm but loving hand to rein in their natural enthusiasm.

There are two different breeds of Welsh Corgi, with the Cardigan being the other. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is that Cardigan Welsh Corgis have much longer tails. Cardis also have more rounded ears, while Pembroke’s ears are pointed. Originally bred for herding cattle, Welsh Corgis were brought to the British Isles from the European mainland by Flemish weavers in the Middle Ages. Being the favorite dog breed of Queen Elizabeth II has elevated their status since then.

The appearance of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Like the dachshund, the corgi has a long, low-slung body and very short legs. At approximately 10 to 12 inches high at the shoulder, this puts them in the perfect position to nip at the heels of uncooperative livestock. Their legs may be short but are very powerful, allowing them to run around all day long while herding. The coats of many PWCs are red or fawn, but they can also be sable or black and tan.

Interestingly, despite resembling the dachshund in body shape, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has little in common genetically with the German breed. Rather, it is more closely related to other European breeds, such as the Finnish Spitz, Norwegian Elkhound, or the Keeshond.

corgi dogThe corgi’s coat consists of two layers as Corgis are bred for outdoor work in cold northerly regions. The coarse outer coat protects it from water, while the soft undercoat keeps it warm. As a result, corgis shed frequently and, like other double-coated breeds, “blow coat” during the spring and early summer.

While you can’t stop your corgi from shedding, you can help to keep the dander from spreading all over the house with daily brushing with a slicker brush. Your corgi should have a bath once a month, at least. This is especially important during the shedding season because it helps the dead hair come loose more easily. You can then use a dog grooming rake to strip out the undercoat, but only after your dog dries off completely.

Exercise and Training for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are responsive to dog training Houston and fairly eager to please. However, they are sensitive and respond best to positivity and rewards. Corgis have a big bark, so for little dogs, this may be an area that needs special attention if living in an urban setting.

PWCs are athletic and excel at dog sports, not only herding but tracking, agility, and obedience competitions. They have a lot of energy due to their herding background and therefore need moderate exercise daily. Because of their short legs, they can’t keep up with a bicycle, but they do well with a slow jog or a long walk.

Health Concerns with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi

dog on waterCorgis are prone to weight gain, so it is important to feed them high-quality dog food and make sure they get plenty of exercises to work off the extra pounds. Be careful not to feed too many treats during training, or your dog may put on excess weight, which could increase the risk of other health conditions.

Two of the biggest health concerns with PWC are eye disorders and hip dysplasia. A reputable breeder will screen for these conditions in breeding stock. In addition to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia is a similar condition that can affect the front legs.

If hip dysplasia or another musculoskeletal condition is present, excess weight can exacerbate the symptoms, which makes it even more important to keep your dog’s weight under control. Other health concerns with corgis include:

  • Von Willebrand’s disease (bleeding disorder)
  • Cardiac Issues (heart conditions)
  • Degenerative myelopathy (spinal cord injury)

Despite these risks, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is generally considered a healthy breed.
